NORTHERN THAILAND

Northern Thailand, bordering Myanmar and Loas, is an area characterised by dense forests and misty mountainous terrain, called home by Westerners and ancient hill tribes. Travellers can explore bustling street markets, glorious temples, trekking tours, wildlife experiences, and some of the best Thai food you can get your hands on.

Getting to Northern Thailand is really easy too, you can get the night train from Bangkok or get a cheap flight.

Leave the Western world behind for the mystical hill tribes of Thailand. There are seven major hill tribes in the region, including Akha, Lahu, Yao, Hmong, Karen, Lawa and Lisu. Most of the tribes are set high up in the mountains, so it takes some effort to get there, but it is so worth it.

We visited the Karen Long Neck Village. The women originally wore the heavy brass rings around their necks to protect them from tigers and snakes, but over time it was gradually seen as a symbol of beauty. Girls get asked at around 3 years old if they want to follow their ancestors and wear the golden rings, which you can see on the photos that most say yes! I did actually find it quite a sad place to visit, but also really interesting.

Elephant tours are popular in Thailand, and especially in the North, but make sure you do plenty of research prior to booking, as some can treat the elephants really badly. We went to "Elephant Jungle Sanctuary" which was amazing and a baby had only just recently been born. We got to feed them, bath them and learn so much about their lifestyle. While we were there we also saw lovely local people working on the rice fields. They all spoke really good English there and it was a lovely day out.

In Chiang Mai, where we stayed, the Night Market was absolutely amaaaazing.

As does pretty much anywhere in Thailand, Chiang Mai has some amazing temples. My favourite by far was Wat Chedi Luang. I found it so interesting.

Finally, if you ever get the chance to go to Northern Thailand, make sure you leave some free time to go visit Chiang Rai and the White Temple. It has to be one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.
